The History of Vanity

People have always played with their appearance.  Throughout history women have drawn attention to certain features, change the look of some and played down others for the sake of the current beauty ideals and cosmetic market trends.

Egyptians, early Persians and Indians used henna for skin softening baths, hair dying, nail color and facial cosmetics.  In Middle Age Europe women wore decorative fabric patches shaped as stars, heart, moons or crosses on their faces to draw attention to certain areas or to hide scars and imperfections.

The same can be said about cosmetics history: makeup and cosmetics have evolved over time, for example centuries ago a pale complexion was most admired and women used cosmetics to paint their faces white.

In the 1920’s having a rib removed to narrow the waistline was a common practice and considered the norm. Prior to that in the Renaissance period, corsets were worn to achieve a similar effect. Or what of the Padaung women from Thailand who wear rings around their necks to stretch them to take on a giraffe like appearance. Let’s face it, looking good isn’t easy.

Nowadays tan skin is considered a beautiful feature, and with dozens of products to choose from achieving a look is so much easier than before.

The new trends for natural products and cruelty free cosmetics gives women an alternative as far as which makeup they want to purchase.  Vegan makeup is also very popular these days. In fact, health extends far beyond appearance as diet, a balanced exercise regiment and regular sleep cycles also contribute to total beauty. One thing is certain, the behavior of vanity is timeless when the process of looking your best is at stake.
